Home Care Services Professionals Talk Common Eye Problems In Senior Adults

Jan 16, 2018 by Tony B.

Often times, we take our vision for granted and this is because we naturally have vision and we do not have to do anything to see – it just happens. Our vision allows us to move around and throughout every day life without wondering what is in front of us or behind us. But, if our home care services professionals were to ask you to think about the biological process of the eyes, would you know what to say? For many seniors, vision issues are worrisome.

Once a senior reaches age 60 or older, there are a number of eye diseases and conditions that can start to manifest themselves. The symptoms that are associated with these diseases and conditions may lie dormant for a while and this can mean that the disease or condition is able to progress. Home care services experts remind you that even though your loved one may think his or her vision is okay, it may be time to have an eye exam.

Below, we will cover four of the most common eye diseases that seniors need to worry about:

  1. Diabetic retinopathy – This is a complication that occurs when a senior has diabetes. This is where the blood vessels in the eye will burst and start to bleed, and eventually detach from the retina itself.
  2. Cataracts – This condition occurs when there is a buildup of proteins on the lens of the eye itself. A cataract will cause cloudy or opaque vision in the elderly.
  3. Glaucoma – Glaucoma is present when there is too much pressure buildup within the eye and this can lead to serious damage of the eye’s optic nerve. Home care services providers remind you that approximately 1 million people have glaucoma, but are unaware of it.
  4. Age-related macular degeneration – This condition results in blindness and causes damage to the macula, which is located on the eye’s retina.
